The Origin of Thanksgiving: The pilgrims, who left Plymouth, England and arrived in the New World, reaped a bountiful harvest the following summer after spending a harsh New England winter and was so grateful that they wanted to thank God and to celebrate with their Indian friends by declaring a three-day feast starting on December 13, 1621. Actually America’s first Thanksgiving services were held in Virginia in 1697. In 1789, following a proclamation issued by President George Washington, America celebrated its first Day of Thanksgiving to God under its new constitution.
