About Martin Luther King Jr.

Martin Luther King, Jr. fought for equal civil rights for African Americans. Each year, on the 3rd Monday of January, we celebrate his life and his dream. The day was made a national holiday in 1986. Martin Luther King, Jr. was born on January 15, 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia. He was a minister who participated in many peaceful demonstrations in regard to unfair treatment of African Americans. He is famous for his meaningful speech “I Have a Dream.” He won the Nobel Peace prize in 1964. Martin Luther King was assassinated on April 4, 1968 in Memphis, Tennessee.

The Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial in Washington, DC honors Dr. King’s national and international contributions and vision for all to enjoy a life of freedom, opportunity, and justice.
The Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial is located on the northwest corner of the Tidal Basin at the intersection of West Basin Drive SW and Independence Avenue SW, Washington DC. 

The closest metro stations are Smithsonian and Foggy Bottom.

 

2. Martin Luther King Day of Service in Washington, DC

Martin Luther King Day of Service was designated by Congress in 1994 transforming the holiday into a national day of community service. Serve DC and the Office of the Secretary ask for volunteers to take part in a day that keeps alive the legacy of service in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Volunteers will participate in over 1300 projects that spread throughout DC’s 8 wards.  Fine more information on the website below.
